Buy unique black and white fine art photo greeting cards: The story of Treehog

Back to Gallery

The groundhog (Marmota monax), also known as the beaver-squirrel, woodchuck, land beaver, bunnydog, or whistlepig, is a rodent. And yes, they climb trees. According to Wikipedia, groundhogs climb trees to escape predators or survey their surroundings.

This photograph was taken in my back yard in Ohio. At the time, I was unaware that they commonly climbed trees and seeing such was a surprise. The strange thing is that never before or after this shot have I seen a bunnydog in my neighborhood.

Most people think it's odd to see a groundhog in a tree - if everyone knew the truth, this photo wouldn't seem as novel.

On the front is a quote by seventeenth-century English churchman and historian Thomas Fuller: "He that would have fruit must climb the tree."
