Greeting Card Project: Birds in Flight

What you need

  • card stock - black metallic - 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" folded to make a 5 1/2" x 4 1/4" card blank
  • Mulberry paper - gold or cranberry - 8 1/2" x 11"
  • birds in flight rubber stamp (credit Kidstamps)
  • embossing powder - cranberry, gold
  • embossing ink - clear or dark red
  • embossing pen - clear
  • heat gun
  • raffia and yarn
  • glue stick
  • paper trimmer (optional)

How to do it

Step 1

Stamp and emboss the image onto the card front using the cranberry powder. Next, use the clear embossing pen to go over parts of the image and use the gold powder to emboss. The idea is to have some gold highlights with the cranberry color showing through. If the heat warps the card, put the card under a weight a few hours or overnight.

Step 2

To make the liner - Fold the mulberry paper in half. For the deckled edges to extend about 3/8," Make the tears so the dimensions are about 6 1/4" x 10" or 6 1/4" x 5" folded in half.

Use a paint brush to "paint" water where you want the tear and tear on that line. For a finer edge, hold a straight edge on the paper as a tearing guide. A hot iron can be used to dry and smooth the paper.

Step 3

Glue the liner in place and tie on the raffia and yarn.

Step 4 (optional)

Using a grass or pine needles rubber stamp, stamp with gold ink as shown at right. You will probably need to set the ink with the heat gun because the ink won't dry on the metallic card without heat setting it.
