Greeting Card Project: Father's Day Tie

What you need

  • card stock - light blue - 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" french-door folded to make a 4 1/4 x 5 1/2" card blank
  • construction paper - red, green, blue - 1/4" x 8 1/2", 2 each (total of six strips)
  • card stock - white - 1 1/2" x 5 3/4"
  • card stock - white - 2" x 2"
  • small buttons (2)
  • glue
  • scissors
  • paper trimmer

How to do it

Step 1 - Make the french-door fold

Lay the 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" light blue card stock on the table with the 8 1/2" side at the top. Make light pencil marks at 2 1/8" and 6 3/8" from the left edge at both the top and bottom. Make a light pencil line connecting both 2 1/8" marks and both 6 3/8" marks. Use these lines to score with. See Basic Cutting and Folding.

When done, you should have your card folded as shown at right.

Step 2

Start with a color of your choosing at the bottom corner, gluing it in place at a 45° angle. Leave all the pieces a little longer than they need to be - you'll cut the shape of the tie later. Continue with alternating colors (don't goof and get the colors out of order like I did) until it looks like the far right photo.

After letting the glue dry, use scissors or a paper trimmer to make the tie shape as shown in the photo at the top of this page. Glue the tie to the left-hand flap of the card blank.

Step 3

Cut two collar pieces to look similar to the photo at right. I have not provided dimensions for these as they will vary slightly depending on the way the tie is cut. Refer to the photo at the top of the page. Glue the collar pieces in place.

Step 4

Glue the buttons in place.
