This is Moore's Chapel United Methodist Church near Blue Creek, Ohio, the first Methodist church in Ohio and the Northwest Territory. It was founded in 1795 or 1796 and the original building was erected in 1800.
The cloud in this photograph was truly a wonder. The cloud bisected nearly the whole sky from east to west directly overhead. One edge of the cloud gradually thinned to blend with the blue sky, while the other edge was mostly sharply defined. This created the illusion that the dome of the sky had a great rift and one half overlapped the other. Never had I seen anything like it before nor have I seen anything like it since.
On the front is a quote by seventeenth-century English author Thomas Browne: "We carry within us the wonders we seek without us."
