How to Make a Beveled Window in a Greeting Card
This is the same principle as dry embossing.
Step 1
Cut a window in the greeting card front as shown on How to Cut a Window.
Step 2
Determine the 'frame' size, that is, the distance from the edge of the cut window to the bevel. Our example window is 2¼"W x 2"H and we want a 1/8" frame, so the bevel dimensions will be 2½"W x 2¼"H.
Step 3
Using a piece of card roughly the same size as (or slightly smaller than) the card front, cut a window the size of the bevel (in our case, that would be 2½"W x 2¼"H). This will be the bevel template. (It's a good idea to save the templates for future use.)
Step 4
Open the card flat (inside face-up) and place the bevel template so that all sides of it and the window in the card front are equal and parallel. (fig. 1)
Tape in place with removable tape. (Note: Some removable tape will damage some card stock. Tap tape on clothing a few times to lessen the strength of the adhesive. Alway test on a scrap piece of card if you're unsure.)
Step 5
(fig. 2) Place card on a light box with the card open and the front facing up. If you don't have a light box, try this light box alternative. With a ball-point stylus, press the card front down into the void of the template to create the bevel. Do not press the stylus on the entire area to be raised - trace only the outline of the bevel. Use short strokes so you are going over the same area a few times (this takes practice). It helps to rub the stylus on wax paper occasionally to help the press go smoothly.
